Overlapping conditions

Depending on presentation, veterinarians may consider lymphoma, bacterial or fungal infection, liver disease, cardiac disease and immune-mediated conditions. The relevant list changes with age, geography, history and examination.

Match tests to the presentation

• Effusion: fluid analysis, cytology and selected microbiology or molecular tests
• Masses or lymph nodes: imaging, aspiration or tissue sampling
• Eye signs: ophthalmic examination
• Neurological signs: neurological localisation with imaging or CSF considered where appropriate

Treatment response does not replace diagnosis

Improvement can inform reassessment, but it should not hide an incorrect diagnosis or concurrent disease. Findings and progress need periodic review.
