FIP PCR, antibody and Rivalta tests: uses and limitations
These tests answer different questions. Their value depends on the specimen, disease pattern and the probability of FIP before testing.

- PCR detects feline coronavirus RNA in the submitted specimen
- Antibody tests indicate exposure to feline coronavirus, not FIP itself
- Rivalta assesses characteristics of chest or abdominal effusion
- Immunostaining looks for viral antigen within cells or tissue
Specimen choice changes usefulness
Faecal PCR can show coronavirus shedding but does not diagnose FIP. When effusion is present, analysis of that fluid can be more informative than blood alone. Ocular or neurological presentations may require specialist examination and carefully selected samples.
Interpret positives and negatives in context
Sensitivity and specificity vary by method, specimen and disease stage. A veterinarian combines the result with history, examination, imaging and routine laboratory findings.
